While most individuals along the autism spectrum face significant challenges and are in need of lifelong support, Aging with Autism’s primary focus will be providing support to organizations who serve more significantly involved individuals with classic autism – those most at risk of institutionalization as they transition to and through adulthood.
The organization recognizes the importance of research and appreciates other organizations that are working in this area. The focus of Aging with Autism is to enrich the lives of adults with classic autism and other developmental disabilities. While research is not the primary purpose of this organization, all programming supported will be evidence based and data will inform improved interventions and program choices.
Recognizing that the needs of individuals with autism will change throughout their lives, the organization will support specific programs for teens and young adults, adults in mid life, seniors and elders. To date there has been very little focus on this population and none that targets needs by adult life stage.
